Indulging in greenery, a place that feels comforting and welcoming, calm, nurturing and warm, friendly, sunny, colorful, happy. Picking herbs, apples, berries and tomatoes, sitting outside, enjoying the sun, eating food, drinking wine, making a fire, being with friends—our laughter is only interrupted by the humming and chirping of bees and birds.
Isn’t this a relatable longing? Can a garden be more than a romantic thought? Beyond its most obvious notions, what can a garden be? What forms can it take?
What does cultural work have to do with cultivation? The crops we raise, the way we plant, harvest, process, preserve, eat and with whom we share our meals—what are the traces these actions leave in our material and social environments? Is gardening a political practice?
Within A Garden for Autarkia we are curious to study concepts and methods of gardening from our extended community of neighbors, friends, horticulturists, artists, designers, writers, cultural workers, activists and researchers.
Unique to most art organizations, Autarkia shares its physical space with the restaurant Delta Mityba. It is where we would warmly like to invite you to come for a visit and meet with us.

Artist Sara Rodrigues and Delta Mityba (Jonas Palekas) collaborate on a workshop inspired by Sara’s video ‘In the beginning there was a box’, presenting tactics for local, sustainable food production and use. Sara Rodrigues will invite to make a box-garden for the beginning of a more sustainable life, and Delta Mityba chef Jonas Palekas will present the process of making kimchi. Autarkia will also launch a new poster edition from designer Nerijus Rimkus and curator Borbála Soós.
